The potential of Hudson Valley glacial floods to drive abrupt climate change

چکیده
Abstract The periodic input of meltwater into the ocean from a retreating Laurentide Ice Sheet is often hypothesized to have weakened Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and triggered several cold periods during last deglaciation (21,000 8,000 years before present). Here, we use numerical model investigate whether Intra-Allerød Cold Period was by drainage Glacial Lake Iroquois, ~13,300 ago. Performing large suite experiments with various combinations single successive, short (1 month) long year) duration flood events, were unable find any significant weakening AMOC. This result suggests that although Hudson Valley floods occurred close beginning Period, they unlikely sole cause. Our results implications for re-evaluating relationship events (past future) climatic cooling, particularly regards location, volume, frequency, duration.

Mechanisms of Abrupt Climate Change of the Last Glacial Period
[1] More than a decade ago, ice core records from Greenland revealed that the last glacial period was characterized by abrupt climate changes that recurred on millennial time scales. Since their discovery, there has been a large effort to determine whether these climate events were a global phenomenon or were just confined to the North Atlantic region and also to reveal the mechanisms that were...
متن کاملAbrupt climate change.
Large, abrupt, and widespread climate changes with major impacts have occurred repeatedly in the past, when the Earth system was forced across thresholds. Although abrupt climate changes can occur for many reasons, it is conceivable that human forcing of climate change is increasing the probability of large, abrupt events. Were such an event to recur, the economic and ecological impacts could b...
متن کاملAbrupt glacial climate changes due to stochastic resonance.
Using an ocean-atmosphere climate model we demonstrate that stochastic resonance could be an important mechanism for millennial-scale climate variability during glacial times. We propose that the glacial ocean circulation, unlike today's, was an excitable system with a stable and a weakly unstable mode of operation, and that a combination of weak periodic forcing and plausible-amplitude stochas...
متن کاملThe economics of abrupt climate change.
The US National Research Council defines abrupt climate change as a change of state that is sufficiently rapid and sufficiently widespread in its effects that economies are unprepared or incapable of adapting. This may be too restrictive a definition, but abrupt climate change does have implications for the choice between the main response options: mitigation (which reduces the risks of climate...
متن کاملAbrupt change in climate and climate models
First, we review the evidence that abrupt climate changes have occurred in the past and then demonstrate that climate models have developing capacity to simulate many of these changes. In particular, the processes by which changes in the ocean circulation drive abrupt changes appear to be captured by climate models to a degree that is encouraging. The evidence that past changes in the ocean hav...
